What is Air Balancing?

Air Balancing is Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing commercial air conditioning and ventilation systems. There are not just a few words that describe it. Balancing first came in need in the early 80's when new and more advanced A/C systems were being installed. As these systems began to get more complex the need for balancing increased. A very expensive and complex system was not complete without an independent balance company doing the TAB work. We are mostly recognized for setting up the amount of airflow that would be distributed from each air diffuser. However, our job is much more involved than that. I've listed some of the items that are a part of balancing on most jobs:

Measure total airflow on all A/C and exhaust systems

B.

Balance airflow on each supply and exhaust grille

C.

.Measure volts, amps, statics, RPM's, temperatures, and set minimum outside air requirements on all A/C units.

D.

Balance water flow on all pumps, cooling towers, chillers, boilers, and air handling unit coils.

E.

Sound and Vibration if required.

F.

Air quality measurements if required.

The following list will help to prepare you for any job:

1.

Get all equipment submittal, job specifications book, and mechanical drawings.

2.

Read your TAB specification section.

3.

Have all A/C, exhaust, outlet and inlet, ext. sheets filled in with as much information as possible. (submittal data, grille designs, ext.)

4.

Label all A/C units and grilles on prints completely.

5.

Walk your job at different stages of construction to get familiar with the project and to find any installation errors.

6.

Talk with contractors involved with your project on a regular basis to establish a good working relationship.

7.

Make sure that all equipment has power and startup has been completed.

8.

Before balancing any unit check it over carefully to insure that filters and coils are clean. Fan rotation must also be checked.

When all of these items have been checked you will be ready to start the balancing process
